As you explore our pages, you may have noticed a recurring phrase that echoes our core values: “Our Content Is King.” Many have wondered what drives this mantra? In this article, we delve into the backstory and explore the significance of African storytelling in today’s digital landscape.

The phrase “Content Is King” was first coined by Bill Gates in his 1996 essay, where he predicted that content would become the key driver of value on the internet. Fast-forward to the present day, and this prediction has proven remarkably prescient. Content has become the lifeblood of the digital economy, with creators and consumers alike relying on high-quality content to inform, entertain, and inspire.

However, as the digital landscape has evolved, so too has the context in which content is created and consumed. In an era of global content wars, where algorithms and clickbait headlines often dominate the narrative, it’s easy to lose sight of the true value and richness of African content.

“Our Content Is King” was a deliberate reimagining of Gates’ original phrase, crafted by Ghanaian creative consultant / filmmaker Nana Kofi Asihene to shine a spotlight on the African narrative. By adding the possessive “Our,” Asihene’s rewording serves as a powerful affirmation of the value and agency of African storytellers.

After discussions with Asihene, our team, led by F.Koku, retouched the insignia to fit. The resulting symbol now serves as a powerful emblem of our commitment to showcasing and empowering African storytellers, affirming the value and richness of African content, and invite others to join us in celebrating and amplifying these vital narratives.

So why does African storytelling matter?
The answer lies in the diversity, complexity, and richness of African experiences and perspectives. From the vibrant cultures and traditions of the continent, to the innovative solutions and entrepreneurial spirit of its people, Africa is a treasure trove of stories waiting to be told.

By amplifying African voices and stories, we can begin to shift the narrative around Africa and its people. We can move beyond stereotypes and simplistic representations, and instead showcase the nuance, depth, and diversity of African experiences.

“Our Content Is King” is more than just a mantra – it’s a call to action. It’s an invitation to join us in celebrating and amplifying the vital narratives of African storytellers. By embracing the power and value of African content, we can help create a more inclusive, diverse, and vibrant digital landscape – one that truly reflects the richness and complexity of African experiences.
